The tope is the most common (and popular!) medium sized shark that swims in the waters off Portpatrick. The largest we have landed is 56lb with many others over 50lb and lots landed in the +40lb range. They can be fished for with normal 30-50lb class tackle in depths of water upto 300ft using running ledger rigs with weights upto 2lb. I do not use wire for hook lengths as it kinks and is dangerous to hold....I prefer 250lb mono and crimps.
Top Tip: For those not wanting to buy bulk spools of heavy mono, buy a small spool of garden strimmer nylon...its the same stuff!
