Ling and Coalfish
These 2 species grow to supersize with the biggest Ling I know of weighing 55lb and the biggest I have seen at 44lb.....both coming from a wreck . They are also caught over rough ground and in the rock gullies. Average Ling size is 28-34lb!!! Robust tackle is required with large strong hooks and though they are caught on pirks,they prefer a large mackerel / Squid / Coalfish bait.....a 3lb coalfish is not too big a bait!
Coalfish are prolific in the Northern waters and are supersize and supercharged,they are like a sport fish with their speed....my biggest is 30lb! I have also caught 3 coalfish on a trace for a cumulative weight of 65lb!
They can be targetted using gummi makks and pirk or a speed jig...large artificial sandeels on a flowing trace work well also
